Collaborators: Nogamikatuki, Ritsuko Miyake, Tatsuya Ishikawa, Kazuya Horibe

Materials: dust, silica sand, acrylic case, projector, video camera, etc.

Dust (Hokori in Japanese) is a grayish mass of indistinguishable components that is created in human living environments and is an amalgam of all kinds of materials, both man-made and natural, including fibers, dander, dirt, pollen, soil, and clumps of pathogens. Dust spontaneously collects in places where there is little human activity, such as abandoned buildings or behind electrical appliances, and accumulates without anyone noticing. The nature of dust is also expressed in the etymology of the word "Tachihokoru". By focusing on the inextricability and temporality of human activity and dust in the formation process, we considered dust as a living organism that coexists behind the scenes of people's lives. Dust as a living organism becomes unique to each location depending on the environment, including people's daily lives, temperature, humidity, wind, and topography. In this exhibition, dust is electrically charged, and an electric field is generated by static electricity, which causes dust to move. Dust in an electric field exhibits behavior that we cannot control due to the interaction between the clumps, the attraction and repulsion between clumps, and the environment inside the box, such as the topography, humidity, and temperature. The dust used was collected from the vicinity of the exhibition site, and a dry-cleaning shop, which is a familiar place to us all.

This work was created by five participants of Art Hack Day 2018 in Japan and exhibited at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan, Japan), and was a finalist in the WIRED CREATIVE HACK AWARD (Japan) and the Kitakyushu Digital Creator Award (Japan), respectively.

In 2019, it was exhibited at WRO Biennale 2019, a media art biennale in Wroclaw, Poland.
